I Can Help Book (this book is the "Yellow Pages" for the children needing skill help in your classroom): The I Can Help Book is a listing of the children in your class who have mastered certain tasks and skills. They will form your pool of "peer mentors" to children who have not yet mastered the tasks and skills and need help. You make the book by taking photographs of a student doing certain classroom tasks; like tying shoes, buttoning, snapping, opening a tall cabinet, zipping, pushing the swing or doing some other skill or task useful in the classroom. (Note: Choose skills appropriate for the grade level and ability of your children). Put each photograph on a sheet of paper and write the numbers "1" through "10" down the left-hand edge of each paper. Put a line after each number. Do one photo-page for each skill. As children master the pictured skill they write their names on the sheets on the lines 1-10. These children comprise the pool of resources to which other children can go to receive help performing the pictured tasks. Using children as peer teachers will relieve much of the burden on you in providing basic-skill help to the children in your classroom.
